Goal: — ****writing this down will improve clarity
- Get to know subscribers better
- Explore the opportunity to expand beyond a newsletter
Audience target: — if exploring brand new ideas, focus on a specific high-intent group
High-intent subscribers who have left email in feedback forms. If they're not interested in anything beyond a newsletter, idea likely has limited potential.
Context: — frame the conversation
I love writing the newsletter, but I also plan to expand beyond it. Before I do that, I wanted to learn more about you to make sure whatever I make will be useful.
Interview questions: — focus on open-ended questions especially at the start
- What are your goals for your career, within product or beyond that?
- What's the biggest pain in getting to those goals?
- If you could have anything you want to help your career, what would it be?
- If you could wave a magic wand and eliminate any problem related to your career / life, what would it be?
- Tell me about the last time you looked for X / information about PM. What did you look for? How did you look for it? What did you find?
- What do you wish you had access to?
- What other newsletters / resources do you keep up with?
- How does Product Lessons fit in?
- What separates the learning resources you choose to pay for (if any) vs. not? — questions re: payment are sensitive and better asked after you've built some rapport
- If I were to build [pitch solution they’ve described as ideal], and I were planning to charge $X for it, would you be interested in signing up for early-bird price of $Y? — give them incentive to commit early and test real willingness to pay
